.nz Domain Names and the importance of renewal for the second level change
(Message from the .nz Registry)
Recently we saw some domain names going into pending release (pending deletion) and via the Registrar were able to determine that they were being released because the registrant saw more value registering at the second level. As a result of this I thought it would be a good opportunity to help remind registrars (and in turn advise registrants) that releasing a domain name at the third level could limit their ability to secure the second level version of their domain name when this opens up in 2014.The Domain Name Commission website has some great FAQs about what will happen. These FAQs will evolve as the policy elements of the change are finalised. The key point here is that you need to keep your domain name registration active. Once a domain name is released the registrant will not have the protections available to register or reserve their domain at the second level. While the details are still being finalised registrants are best advised to maintain their registration at the second level if they wish to have the opportunity to secure it at the third level. I hope this provides sufficient information about the importance of renewal for .nz domain names leading up to the opening of the second level. Should you need updates on the opening of the second level information will be found at the DNC website.
